At Mary Astell Academy we like to reward our pupils when they exhibit positive behaviour. This is why at the end of each term we like to give our pupils the opportunity to go on a rewards trip to a place of their choice. The pupils who are able to go on this trip are those who have 80% or more points on class charts, those with mainly negatives will not be able to attend this trip and will have to stay in school.

What are Class Charts?

Class charts are an online behaviour record where we track pupils behaviour at the end of each day, giving them positives and negatives depending on how they have behaved throughout the day. The main category we use on class charts are ‘class expectations’ this consists of 4 different positives: “completed work set”, “punctual to lesson”, “remaining in class” and “respectful”. We also use negatives that consist of different levels, including “disrespectful”, “late to lesson”, “work not completed” and “leaving class”. We update these at the end of each day and print out the results at the end of the week to send home for the parents/carers to see how the pupil has behaved throughout the week.

Another way we reward our pupils is on a Friday afternoon when we travel offsite to do a range of activities. The pupils have the choice of going horse riding at Stepney Banks, football at NUcastle Foundation, or team building activities at Moor House. We like to make sure the pupils have plenty time doing these activities, so we let them have their dinner early to make sure we are back in time for 2:20pm. The pupils show a lot of interest and enthusiasm for these sort of things so we like to keep it going to encourage them to continue displaying positive behaviour.

We at Mary Astell believe rewarding students positively reinforces the type of behaviour which we know we can get out of them each day.

Here is just a few photos where you can see the positive impact rewards have on our pupils.
